MaxxForce Fault Codes

MaxxForce was Navistar International's in-house diesel engine line, used in International medium and heavy-duty trucks from 2007-2015. The DT (formerly DT466) was a long-running medium-duty workhorse, but the larger MaxxForce 11 and 13 used an EGR-only emissions strategy that failed to meet EPA 2010 NOx targets and triggered massive warranty costs and recalls. The platform was effectively retired in 2015. Many MaxxForce 11/13 trucks have been repowered with Cummins ISX engines.

MaxxForce Engine Versions

Engine Years Applications Notes
MaxxForce DT 2007-2015 International 4300/4400 DuraStar, 7300/7400/7500 WorkStar, IC Bus CE/RE-Series 7.6L medium-duty (formerly DT466 / DT570 / DT530). Long-running platform; widely used in school buses and vocational trucks.
MaxxForce 7 2007-2015 International TerraStar, MV607, school buses 6.4L V8. Was Ford 6.4L Power Stroke architecture; known for extreme EGR cooler / head bolt failure rate.
MaxxForce 11 2008-2014 International ProStar, TranStar 8600, PayStar 5900, WorkStar 7600 10.5L I6 EPA10. Dual SCR-less / EGR-only emissions strategy that did not meet 2010 NOx targets -- led to major recalls and an effective shutdown of the platform.
MaxxForce 13 2008-2014 International ProStar+ 12.4L I6 EPA10. Same EGR-only emissions strategy as MaxxForce 11. Notorious for warranty claim costs that pushed Navistar into financial trouble.
MaxxForce 15 2010-2012 International ProStar+ (limited) 15.2L I6, very short-lived. Was supposed to be a Cummins ISX competitor; production stopped quickly amid Navistar emissions strategy collapse.

Common MaxxForce Issues

  • EGR cooler cracking and coolant loss (universal across MaxxForce 7, 11, 13)
  • High-pressure fuel pump failures and rail pressure faults on DT and MaxxForce 7
  • Head bolt stretching / head gasket failure on MaxxForce 7 (Ford 6.4L architecture)
  • NOx sensor faults from the EGR-only emissions strategy on MaxxForce 11 / 13
  • Twin thermostat failures causing cold-running codes (P0128) on MaxxForce 11
  • VGT actuator sticking and turbo position sensor failures
  • Many fleet owners repowered MaxxForce 11/13 trucks with Cummins ISX or retired them early due to warranty cost
