Dashboard Warning Lights Meanings (All Makes)

Every dashboard warning light explained. Modern cars use a universal color scheme: red means stop driving or act immediately, yellow/amber means service soon, green or blue is informational. Here's what each symbol means and what to do next.

Dashboard Light Color Code

  • Red: Stop as soon as safely possible. Something is failing or unsafe. Continuing to drive may cause serious damage or injury.
  • Yellow / Amber: Service required soon. The car is usually safe to drive, but have it diagnosed within days, not weeks.
  • Green / Blue: Informational only. A feature is active (cruise, high beams, turn signal, etc.). No action needed.

Engine & Powertrain Warnings

LightColorMeaningWhat to Do
Check Engine (solid) — engine outline Yellow Emissions or engine control issue. A DTC is stored in the PCM. Scan the code. Safe to drive short distances. See our code lookup or P0300, P0420, P0171.
Check Engine (flashing) Yellow/Red Active misfire damaging the catalytic converter. Stop driving or limp home. Fix before it destroys the cat. See P0301-P0308.
Oil Pressure — old-style oil can Red Low oil pressure. Engine is not being lubricated properly. Stop immediately. Do not restart until checked. Even 30 seconds of zero oil pressure can ruin bearings.
Temperature — thermometer in water Red (blue = cold) Engine overheating (red) or still warming up (blue). Red: pull over, shut off. Blue: normal, wait until it goes out before driving hard.
Battery / Charging — battery outline Red Charging system not producing enough voltage. Usually alternator or belt. Drive straight to a shop or home. You have maybe 20-40 miles on the battery alone before the car dies.
Throttle Control — lightning bolt between brackets Yellow/Red Electronic throttle fault. Car may enter limp mode with reduced power. Drive cautiously to a shop. See P2135 throttle position sensor codes.
Fuel Low — fuel pump icon Yellow About 1-2 gallons left. Range varies by vehicle. Refuel soon. Running empty can damage the fuel pump on some models.

Brake & Safety Warnings

LightColorMeaningWhat to Do
Brake Warning — "BRAKE" or "!" in circle Red Parking brake engaged, low brake fluid, or hydraulic failure. Release the parking brake first. If it stays lit, stop and check fluid. Do not drive with low brake fluid.
ABS — "ABS" in circle Yellow Anti-lock braking system has a fault. Regular brakes still work. Have diagnosed soon. ABS is disabled until fixed. See C-code diagnostics.
Airbag / SRS — person with airbag Red Supplemental restraint system fault. Airbags may not deploy in a crash. Get diagnosed. Most shops can't clear SRS codes without a scanner. See our B-code guide.
TPMS — horseshoe with "!" Yellow One or more tires are low on pressure, or a sensor is faulty. Check pressures cold. See our tire pressure reference and TPMS reset procedures.
Traction Control — car with wavy lines Yellow Either actively working (flashing) or system fault (solid). Flashing = slippery, drive gently. Solid = fault, get scanned.
Stability Control / ESC — car sliding Yellow ESC intervention active or system disabled/faulted. If persistent, scan for ABS/ESC codes. Often triggered by wheel speed sensor issues.
Seat Belt — person with belt Red Driver or passenger unbelted. Some cars chime until buckled. Buckle up. Some models light up for heavy objects on the passenger seat.

Diesel-Specific Warnings

LightColorMeaningWhat to Do
Glow Plug — coiled filament Yellow Wait-to-start indicator or glow plug system fault. Wait for it to go out before cranking (cold starts). If it stays lit running, scan for codes. See our diesel hub.
DPF Warning — exhaust with dots Yellow Diesel particulate filter is loaded with soot and needs regeneration. Drive 30-45 min at highway speeds to regen. If it turns red or flashes, shop time. See DPF guide.
DEF Warning — "DEF" or blue fluid icon Yellow Diesel exhaust fluid (urea) is low. Countdown to engine derate begins. Fill the DEF tank. Ignoring it leads to 5 mph limp mode on most diesels.
Water in Fuel — fuel pump with drop Yellow Water detected in fuel filter/separator. Drain the water separator now. Water in injectors = big repair bill.

Informational & Convenience Lights

LightColorMeaning
Cruise Control — speedometer with arrowGreen/WhiteCruise is on (white = ready, green = active speed set).
Low Beam — headlight with lines angled downGreenHeadlights are on.
High Beam — headlight with straight linesBlueHigh beams on. Dim for oncoming traffic.
Fog Lights — headlight with wavy line through beamsGreen/YellowFront or rear fog lights on.
Turn Signal — arrowGreenTurn signal active. Fast blinking = bulb out.
Door Ajar — car with door openRed/YellowA door, hood, or trunk is not fully closed.
Washer Fluid — windshield with fluid sprayYellowWindshield washer reservoir is low.
Security / Theft — car with key or padlockRed/GreenFlashing = immobilizer armed (normal). Solid = key fob or immobilizer fault.

Light Stays On After Repair?

Most warning lights clear automatically after the underlying condition is fixed, but some need manual clearing with a scan tool:

  • Check engine: clears after 2-3 successful drive cycles, or instantly with a scanner.
  • Oil life / service: needs manual reset. See our oil life reset guide.
  • TPMS: often needs relearn. See TPMS reset procedures.
  • SRS / airbag: almost always needs a bi-directional scanner.
  • ABS: clears after fault is fixed, but codes may need manual clearing.
