Spark Plug Types Explained
Not all spark plugs are equal. The electrode material determines lifespan, performance, and price.

Rule of thumb: Always match or exceed the OEM plug type. Never downgrade from iridium to copper -- it can cause misfires and trigger a P0300-P0312 code.

Note: The RAM 1500 Hemi uses 16 spark plugs (two per cylinder) — budget accordingly. For any vehicle not listed here, use the NGK/DENSO finders above rather than a generic chart; wrong heat range or reach can damage an engine.
Signs Your Spark Plugs Need Replacing
Worn spark plugs are the most common cause of P0300 (random misfire) and P0301-P0312 (cylinder-specific misfire) codes.
- Check engine light with misfire codes -- P0300 through P0312 are the most common
- Rough idle -- the engine shakes or stumbles at idle
- Hesitation on acceleration -- delay or stumble when pressing the gas
- Reduced fuel economy -- worn plugs don't burn fuel completely
- Hard starting -- especially noticeable in cold weather
- Engine surging -- inconsistent RPM at steady throttle
Replacement Tips
- Gap check: Even pre-gapped plugs can shift during shipping. Always verify with a gap gauge.
- Anti-seize: Most manufacturers say do NOT use anti-seize on nickel-plated plug threads. Check your manual.
- Torque: Over-tightening strips aluminum heads. Use a torque wrench -- see our torque specs page.
- Dielectric grease: Apply a thin coat inside the boot to prevent sticking and make future removal easier.
- Replace on a cold engine: Aluminum heads expand when hot. Removing plugs from a hot aluminum head risks thread damage.
