Serpentine Belt Routing Diagrams Guide
Your serpentine belt drives every accessory on the engine -- alternator, A/C compressor, water pump, power steering pump. Getting the routing wrong after replacement means squeal, slip, or instant belt destruction. Here's how to find the right diagram for your vehicle.
What a Serpentine Belt Does
Modern engines use a single long "serpentine" belt that snakes around every accessory pulley instead of the multiple V-belts used on older cars. One belt runs the alternator, water pump, A/C compressor, power steering pump, and sometimes the supercharger. If the belt breaks, everything stops at once -- no charging, no coolant circulation, no steering assist.
Routing matters because the belt has a smooth side and a grooved (ribbed) side. The ribbed side grips the grooved accessory pulleys; the smooth side rides on the tensioner and idler pulleys. Get the direction wrong and the belt will slip or shred within minutes.
How to Find Your Exact Diagram
Four reliable sources, in order of preference:
- Under-hood sticker. Most domestic and Asian vehicles print the routing diagram on a sticker near the radiator support, strut tower, or underside of the hood. Check there first.
- Owner's manual or factory service manual. The FSM has exact routing for your engine and model year.
- Belt manufacturer websites. Gates.com, ACDelco.com, and Dayco.com all have free belt-routing lookup tools. Enter year, make, model, and engine -- you get a printable diagram and the part number.
- Take a photo before removal. Whatever the method, take a clear photo of the existing routing before you touch anything. It beats any diagram when you're three knuckles deep in a tight engine bay.
We deliberately don't publish a belt part-number chart: fitment varies by engine option, accessory package, and mid-year changes, and a wrong belt wastes a repair. Use the Gates or Dayco lookup with your exact year/engine instead.
Signs Your Belt Needs Replacement
- Squeal on startup or when turning the wheel. Glazed belt surface or worn ribs lose grip.
- Visible cracks or rib wear. On older neoprene belts, more than 3 cracks per inch = replace. Modern EPDM belts rarely crack -- they wear by losing rib material, which a $0 Gates wear gauge (or comparing rib depth to a new belt) will catch. Check EPDM belts at ~50K miles.
- Missing chunks or frayed edges. Belt is past its life. Replace immediately.
- Glossy, shiny rib surface. Glazing from slip or oil contamination.
- Chirp that comes and goes. Often a failing tensioner or idler, not the belt itself.
- Battery warning light + steering heaviness + A/C blowing warm. Classic sign the belt has broken or jumped off.
Manufacturer replacement interval is usually 60,000-100,000 miles, but inspect it every oil change. A $25 belt that snaps in traffic becomes a tow bill plus possibly a scored crank pulley.
Replacement Tips
- Photograph the routing first. Every time. Diagrams can be wrong for your specific submodel.
- Replace the tensioner with the belt if either is over 60K miles. A weak tensioner destroys a new belt fast.
- Use a proper serpentine belt tool to rotate the tensioner. Breaker bars slip and round off the tensioner bolt.
- Check idler pulleys -- spin them by hand with the belt off. Any roughness or play = replace.
- Don't pry the belt on. If it doesn't slip over the last pulley by hand, the tensioner isn't fully retracted.
- Run the engine for 10 seconds after install and verify smooth tracking on every pulley. Listen for chirp.
