How the fuel-pressure system works (so the code makes sense)
A common-rail diesel pulls fuel from the tank with a low-pressure lift/transfer pump, through the fuel filter/water separator, to a high-pressure pump (CP3 or CP4) that builds the extreme pressure stored in the fuel rail. The fuel rail pressure (FRP) sensor reports actual rail pressure back to the ECM, which trims a pressure regulator / fuel control actuator (FCA/MPROP) to hit a commanded target. When the ECM asks for a pressure and the rail can't get there — supply too low, a leak bleeding it off, or the pump can't build it — it sets P0087. So the whole diagnosis is one question: is the rail falling short because of supply, because of a leak, or because the pump is dying?
Ranked causes & real costs (cheapest first)
- Restricted / overdue fuel filter — the #1 cheap cause. ~$30–$80. Always rule this out first.
- Air in the fuel (suction-side leak) — a loose fitting or cracked line on the low-pressure side lets air in and starves the pump. Parts pennies; finding it is the work.
- Weak lift / transfer pump — low supply means the high-pressure pump can't build commanded pressure. ~$200–$500.
- Leaking pressure regulator / FCA (MPROP) — dumps pressure back to tank, holds the rail low. ~$150–$400.
- Leaking injector — one injector returning too much fuel bleeds the rail (often P0087 + a misfire on that cylinder). ~$300–$600 each.

FAQ
Can I drive with a P0087?
Often not safely. P0087 frequently comes with hard starting, a no-start, sudden power loss, or limp mode because the engine cannot get the fuel pressure it needs. If it is running, drive it only as far as you must — a starving fuel system can leave you stranded, and continuing to crank a failing CP4 pump can spread metal through the whole system.
What is the most common cause of P0087 on a diesel?
A restricted or overdue fuel filter is the cheapest and most common cause, followed by air getting into the fuel on the suction side and a weak lift/transfer pump. Always rule those out before condemning the expensive high-pressure pump.
How much does P0087 cost to fix?
It spans a huge range depending on the cause: a fuel filter is roughly $30–$80, a lift pump around $200–$500, an injector about $300–$600 each, and a high-pressure pump (CP3/CP4) roughly $1,000–$3,500. On CP4 systems, a catastrophic pump failure that contaminates injectors, lines, and the rail can run $8,000–$12,000 — which is exactly why you diagnose before replacing.
What is the CP4 warning about?
Many 2011+ Duramax LML, 2011+ Power Stroke 6.7, and 2019+ Ram 6.7 trucks use the Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure pump, which can fail catastrophically and send metal debris through the entire fuel system. If you suspect the pump on a CP4 engine, check for metal contamination in the fuel first — replacing only the pump on a contaminated system will just kill the new parts.
