Joystick Fault or Joystick Not Calibrated: Why Drive and Boom Functions Won't Respond

symptoms 5 min read Updated 2026-10-21

What the controller sees

A proportional joystick sends the controller a voltage that changes as you move it. The controller needs the centre (neutral) value to be right before it will let anything move, because a joystick that reads off-centre at rest means a function that moves when nobody asked it to.

Holding the joystick at start-up

The most common joystick fault is self-inflicted. On the Genie Z-60 DC, the drive and steer joysticks report "Not Calibrated" when they are "not between 2000 & 3000 mV at startup," and the effect is that drive or steer is disabled. A joystick being held, leaned on or snagged when the machine is switched on reads off-centre, so release it fully, switch off, and power up again before assuming anything is broken.

Checks that find most faults

1. Power up with your hands off the controls. 2. Inspect the joystick cable and connector at the platform control box, where cables are pinched and connectors get wet. 3. On the Genie Z-60 DC the manual has you confirm the joystick's 5 V supply and ground, then watch its signal sweep from roughly 500 to 4,500 mV through full travel. Values differ by model; use your machine's manual. 4. If the wiring is good, substitute a known-good joystick, as Genie's table suggests, before buying one. 5. Recalibrate after replacing a joystick.

A note on codes

Fault codes are not shared between makers. Genie, JLG, Skyjack, MEC, Manitou and CAT each number their faults differently, and the same maker numbers them differently across control generations. The descriptions here explain the component and how it fails; the code your machine shows has to be looked up in that machine's own service manual, by model and serial number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won't my lift drive after I turned it on?

If the joystick was held or bumped during power-up, the controller can flag it as not calibrated or off-neutral and disable drive. Release the controls, switch off, and power up again with your hands clear.

Does a joystick fault mean the joystick is broken?

Not necessarily. Genie's chart lists wiring and backed-out connector terminals before the joystick itself, and recommends substituting a known-good joystick to prove it.

Do I have to recalibrate a new joystick?

Yes. Genie's action for a replaced joystick includes recalibration, and an uncalibrated joystick freezes the function it controls.
